Bye beloved president CorAZON “Cory” Aquino.

Last August 1, 2009, the country Philippines lost one of its most beloved presidents Corazon “Cory” C. Aquino. She was the wife of one of the Philippine heroes, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino. She was the first woman president of the Philippines (the second is the current president Gloria M. Arroyo).  Her death was already an expected one since she was already in the late stage of colon cancer, but The Philippines still is in the state of disbelief for losing her.

But what amazes and moves me was the fact that the Filipino people was at her back from the time of diagnosis until her death. While in the Hospital; people of different ages and religion joined together to pray for her (masses and vigils were done everywhere). I can remember the time during the first EDSA revolution where the whole country was at her back praying for her (In vigils, masses, and intercessions). She was fighting for the country and its democracy then, but the last days of her life, she was fighting for a personal battle in which nobody can fight with or for her except her (alone). But with the same courage and valiance to fight against the dictatorship of that era, against planes, tanks, and weapons; she fought cancer until the end but this time she lost the battle only to once again win the hearts of her people.

When I heard the comments of her friends and her (then) cabinet members, I was so awe struck by what I heard. A survivor of seven coup attempts; she never showed that she was afraid. She valiantly stood her ground (A show of great courage from a house wife-turned president). Today many of the high ranking officers that plotted the coup attempt publicly apologize to the late president.

She was not the most gifted or the most brilliant of all presidents; as matter of fact she is not the type to run and govern such office. But she was the only one who was in the best position to stand, and was courageous enough to stand for what is right. What a leader.  During her time she was not accused for corruption, because it was not in her character to lust for money, she (like her husband) doesn’t have the appetite for power (which is the scarcest trait in the leaders of today). What she had from the beginning until the end was her faith to her God and not to self (again an ingredient that is missing in today’s leadership and society).

Cory today, Wednesday (august 5, 2009) will be the day of her burial and it will be one of the saddest times in Philippine history.

Cory is and will remain a national treasure for the whole Filipino people, her life and legacy will stand for generations to come. People will know that she was here and helped change the course of history. Filipinos are forever grateful to her, and she will be forever missed.

Bye madam President.
